“I’m now driving the ball about 200 yards whereas before I was hitting it maybe 180,” says the Southern Californian who had been changing drivers every three or four years. He’d previously bought a used Honma BERES driver on OfferUp – his first experience with the club brand. “I found out it was from 2015, and I hit it extremely well,” he says. “But I always felt that I was sacrificing distance. And I started thinking that technology has changed a lot in the last seven or eight years, so maybe the new BERES Black will give me a few more yards.”
Not only did the Black add distance, it also kept tee shots down the middle. Sekermestrovitch knew his outside-in swing path usually induced a slice, but the BERES Black’s slightly closed clubface angle helped straighten his drives. “And on occasion, when I take an inside-out path, I can actually draw the ball – something I've never ever done in 50 years of playing golf,” he says. “It’s like a built-in ‘auto correct’ for straighter shots.”
Sekermestrovich also likes the “kick” in the Honma ARMRQ MX R-flex shaft – it generates ball speed without him needing to overswing. That’s critical for him because he's a disabled veteran with a severe sciatica low back issue that requires him to wear a very tight sciatica back wrap. “The shaft kick enables me to maintain accuracy and distance without having to overswing or over-torque my back and neck, which irritates and runs a high risk of causing severe sciatica nerve damage,” he says.
After experiencing the driver, Sekermestrovich went out and bought the matching 3-wood, 7-wood and hybrid, and is hitting those “just straight as an arrow. The confidence that I know that I'm going to hit the ball much straighter and further with each of these clubs is so comforting. And their craftsmanship and workmanship are fantastic. They're just beautiful clubs to have in your bag. And they feel solid, also.”
His friends all ask to try his Honma driver. He has a standard response. “I won’t let them,” he laughs. “I don't want them to touch it. But yes, I’m an absolute believer in these clubs. Irons are the next step for me. Whenever I can afford them, they will be my next purchase. They are a work of art.”
